There's much more involved in the transition than changing light bulbs. We need a whole realignment of thinking. We need to ask the questions of how we got here in the first place and how do we meet our hungers without so much consumption?

The People’s College of Transition Skills is a grass-roots, informal network of neighbor teaching neighbor. We meet in homes, backyards, parks, schools, or empty storefronts to share our skills with each other.

Imagine a future where life is more socially connected, more meaningful and satisfying, more sustainable, and more equitable than what we are experiencing today. What would it be like? How would we make it happen?

Taking over native people's land isn't just something in the past, it's happening right now, wherever multinationals find diamonds, or metal, or oil. Watch this moving film by Survival International.

Milton's Eco-Tours

With spring approaching let's start thinking about getting to know the our "City in a Garden." Milton Dixon provided me with an excellent tour of Rogers Park, full of knowledge of wild edibles, and medicinal plants. We explored the wild ecosystem for motherwort, crab apples, and picked wild grapes. Even during the winter, he's plucked crab apple trees to make mead wine. As a permaculturalist, he can show you places to find wild foods safe from pollution. As a personality, he is playful and imagi… Continue

Community Weaving and Transition Towns

Last Tuesday night, I attended the launch of Chicago Community Weaving. We are signing up people to be good neighbors, to help each other and ask for help, connecting people and services. This is a great model for the connection of neighbors to help each other, much like we do organically at church. We'll need this kind of rapid connection to meet the tremendous human needs that we'll face during the transition.

Compassionate ways of curbing population growth???

Curbing population growth is a controversial issue, but here's a quote I came across that describes one compassionate ways of curbing growth. Do others of you have more ideas?

"One of the most effective forms of foreign aid is support for educating girls. The result is smaller families, faster economic growth, and female participation in the formal economy. So how about a major American effort to promote girls' education in poor countries, with a strong component of American volunteers?"

World Clock - Tracking Oil, Cars, Population

I just came across this interesting tool recommended by a friend from England. It's a world clock with all sorts of rates of growth turning before your eyes. Fascinating look at the big picture.

I went over to Pam's today to talk about permaculture in her yard... She says you live across the street from me!

She also said something about edibles in the raised beds in the parkway. I'd like to see some currants or gooseberries go in there.

Well now . . . you ARE an inspiration!

At this time we need to spread the word about our events so that we can get about 20 committed people to take the next step (I am hearing you are one of them . . . ).

So - anyone you know who might be interested that you could invite to Thursday's screening or those planned thereafter would be terrific. BTW - Saturday's workshop was so good we're going to do it again. Just need to schedule it - and, off we go!

See you Thursday?
